KANES HILL PRE-SCHOOL CURRICULUM
Our curriculum is focused through the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage. At Kanes Hill Pre-school we want to give the children in our setting the freedom, ability and encouragement to learn across all seven areas of learning:
Our practitioners will guide the children through their play by allowing the children to lead the play and then the staff will engage and help develop them within all areas of learning by using the following strategies: modelled behaviour, showing and demonstrating, scaffolding, encouraging, and exploring new ideas by thinking creatively and critically.
We understand all children will develop at their own pace and through their own interests and characteristic of learning appropriate to them, so our curriculum has to be flexible. We will take the relevant time to develop each child.
Most children will firstly develop a strong foundation in the Prime Areas of Learning. With a solid foundation built in the Prime areas of learning the children are then able to develop and extend their existing knowledge, learning new and more complex skills and knowledge within the Specific Areas of Learning.
Kanes Hill Pre-school curriculum comprises three areas of learning which focus on:
1- developing communication and language
2- feelings and emotions
3- physical development
Communication and language supports all areas of learning in a child’s early years. At Kanes Hill we will be encouraging communication and language to develop as children learn.
This will include: modelling language, providing a narrative for what they are doing, explaining, questioning, reasoning, recalling and using different words during their play, words that they may not have come across before.
Extending a child’s vocabulary during play is also a very important part of their development. We will therefore continuously try to expand their language skills by using a combination of techniques to suit the individual child’s stage of learning.
We want children to think, share ideas and communicate feelings. We can support worries and concerns they may have. We believe happy children will learn and prepare them for the next stage/transition in their learning.
The majority of our children don’t have access to a garden and we will provide many opportunities to play outside where they can use our larger equipment to develop their larger muscles, along with engaging in sensory experiences, art and design media or using malleable materials will develop/support their shoulders, elbows, wrists and hands, essential in preparation controlling smaller muscles for handling and writing.
We will challenge and enrich children’s learning by introducing new experiences as and when appropriate to their development, by reviewing both their strengths and areas in need of development, building on interests and provoking curiosity and enthusiasm for other subjects.
